Recent economic data underscored just how interesting a time it is in the financial markets. In the U.S., weaker-than-expected jobs growth pointed to signs of a softening labour market, even as most of the “Magnificent Seven” companies once again reported stronger-than-expected earnings and revenue growth. This continued strength from the market’s largest players has been a key reason why financial markets have remained remarkably resilient in 2025, despite heightened uncertainty around tariffs and interest rates.
Notably, Microsoft — a holding for many of our clients — became only the second U.S. company to reach a $4 trillion valuation after posting another quarter of stellar results. The Federal Reserve held interest rates steady, frustrating President Trump, while markets are now pricing in an 80% probability of a September rate cut following last Friday’s jobs report. The Bank of Canada also kept rates unchanged but, given Canada’s sluggish GDP growth, is expected to make one or two additional cuts before year-end.
August will be one to watch, with tariffs now fully in effect following the August 1 deadline. Historically, August and September are slower months for equities, but this year’s unique backdrop may well rewrite the usual seasonal patterns.
